Bring Your Own Boat Fishing Lodge Rental
THE ILDSTAD HOUSE is an extremely private, historically significant, oceanfront home on 23 acres in Quatsino, BC. Built in 1941, this 3-bedroom property features a private dock, a commercial ice machine, and Starlink internet. Accessible only by boat, it offers unparalleled solitude and world-class fishing on the Canadian West Coast. Perfect for fishing expeditions, family retreats, and team gatherings in one of the world's most beautiful undeveloped coastal settings.

World-Class Scenery
Quatsino Sound is a truly special place. From the house and dock, you'll often witness whales breaching—sometimes just a few hundred feet away. The area is also home to sea otters, which are remarkable to observe in their natural habitat. This part of the world remains essentially undeveloped because of its remote location and challenging conditions, which means you have the rare opportunity to experience pristine wilderness few people ever encounter.
Take time during your stay to appreciate what this extraordinary coastal environment has to offer. Whether you're watching marine life from the dock, exploring the shoreline, or simply taking in the raw beauty of the landscape, Quatsino Sound provides moments of genuine connection with nature that are increasingly difficult to find anywhere in the modern world.

More About THE ILDSTAD HOUSE
THE ILDSTAD HOUSE accommodates up to 12 guests across three bedrooms, each with three beds (nine beds total). The main floor features comfortable living, dining, and fully equipped kitchen spaces, while the rustic, undeveloped basement includes a workspace for fish packaging, freezer storage and laundry facilities.
Set on 23 acres with approximately 400 feet of private ocean frontage, the property offers plenty of space and privacy. From the home, you won’t see another residence—just the surrounding shoreline and forest.
For fishing groups, the property is particularly well equipped. The private dock can accommodate up to four 30-foot boats and features a covered fish-cleaning station with room for up to four people to work at once. A large fish-cutting surface and 12-volt solar-powered saltwater wash-down are available at the dock, along with a commercial ice machine capable of producing approximately 500 pounds of ice per day.
For packaging your catch, the basement provides a dedicated workspace with a stainless-steel table, flash freezer and additional freezer storage. The basement can be accessed from inside the home or directly through an exterior door.
Starlink internet, a fully equipped kitchen, BBQ and laundry facilities are available. Spend your days fishing, relaxing, holding team meetings, gathering with your group or exploring the community of Quatsino, including St. Olaf’s Church, the historic schoolhouse and the Quatsino Museum & Archives.
How To Get Here
Quatsino is boat-access only, with no road or ferry access. If you’re bringing your own boat, you can launch from Coal Harbour, approximately 20 minutes from Port Hardy, and travel about 20 minutes by water to the property, where you can dock directly at the house.
If you’re travelling without your own boat, water taxi service is available from Coal Harbour directly to the property. Helicopter or float plane transportation can also be arranged.
Please arrange transportation in advance. We can provide a list of local service providers upon request.
Guests have full access to the home, dock, shoreline and outdoor areas. The basement, including the laundry facilities, fish-packaging workspace and freezer storage, is also accessible to guests. A separate locked area of the basement is reserved for owner use.
We ask that guests clean up the fish-cleaning station and basement packaging areas after each use.

World-Class Fishing At Your Doorstep
The waters surrounding Winter Harbour and Quatsino on northern Vancouver Island represent some of Canada's finest sport fishing destinations. This remote, pristine region offers year-round fishing opportunities for species that draw anglers from around the world: Pacific salmon (particularly chinook and coho), halibut, ling cod, albacore tuna, Pacific spot prawns, and Dungeness crab. The combination of nutrient-rich waters, minimal commercial fishing pressure, and the area's geographic position create a haven for serious fishing enthusiasts seeking trophy-sized catches and consistent action.
The salmon fishing here is particularly renowned. Chinook salmon—some weighing over 30 pounds—prowl these waters alongside coho and other species. The halibut fishery is equally impressive, with abundant populations of large, fighting fish that challenge both skill and equipment. Ling cod provide exciting bottom fishing with excellent table fare, while the seasonal albacore tuna run brings pelagic fishing opportunities that rival anywhere on the West Coast. For those seeking a more relaxed pace, prawn and crab fishing offers rewarding results—fresh Dungeness crab, caught and prepared on-site, is incomparable.
Uncrowded, Unforgettable Fishing
What sets Winter Harbour apart is not just the abundance and quality of fish, but the unspoiled nature of the fishery itself. Unlike more accessible coastal destinations, these waters see relatively few anglers, meaning less pressure on stocks and more opportunity for memorable catches. The scenic beauty is equally impressive—pristine shorelines, dramatic coastal landscapes, and abundant wildlife viewing combine with world-class fishing to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you're a seasoned angler pursuing trophy fish or seeking authentic West Coast fishing in one of Canada's last truly remote destinations, this area delivers an experience simply unmatched elsewhere.
Self-Guided Fishing at Your Own Pace
This is self-guided fishing at its finest. Browse the owner's personal photos—catches from family, friends, and guests—to see the quality of fishing available. The owners are happy to share fishing locations and techniques that deliver professional results, allowing you and your group to fish independently while benefiting from their local knowledge.
Rent the home with your fishing group, catch fish like those in our gallery, process your catch on-site, and then unwind at your private 23-acre oceanfront retreat—all without the premium costs of a guided fishing lodge.
